Understanding Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)

Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS) is a connective tissue disorder that often goes undiagnosed or misunderstood. At Epoch Health, we believe in empowering our patients with knowledge, especially when it comes to conditions that impact everyday movement, comfort, and wellbeing.

What Is hEDS?

hEDS is one type of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome - a group of conditions that affect the connective tissues, which support skin, joints, blood vessels, and organs. The hallmark of hEDS is joint hypermobility - joints that move beyond the normal range.

People with hEDS may also experience:

  • Joint instability and frequent dislocations or subluxations

  • Soft, stretchy skin

  • Chronic musculoskeletal pain

  • Fatigue

  • Frequent injuries from minimal trauma

These symptoms can range from mild to significantly disabling and often impact a person's ability to engage in daily activities, exercise, or work.

More Than Just Flexible Joints

Although joint hypermobility is the most obvious feature, hEDS can affect multiple systems in the body. Many people also report:

  • Functional gastrointestinal issues

  • Autonomic dysfunction (e.g., dizziness, fainting, or orthostatic intolerance)

  • Sleep disturbances and fatigue

  • Anxiety or mood changes

  • Migraines and other chronic headaches

While some cardiovascular signs, like mitral valve prolapse or aortic root dilation, can be present, they are usually mild and not linked to serious cardiac complications.

Diagnosis and Management

Currently, there’s no genetic test available to confirm hEDS. Diagnosis is made using clinical criteria, including a physical examination, family history, and a checklist of symptoms.

At Epoch Health, our approach to managing hEDS is holistic and patient-centred. While there’s no cure, supportive care can make a significant difference in quality of life. Treatment may include:

  • Individualised rehabilitation programs to improve joint stability and muscle strength

  • Pain management strategies, both physical and lifestyle-based

  • Nutritional and gut health support to manage digestive issues

  • Stress and sleep management through counselling or mindfulness approaches

Our team works closely with patients to provide integrated care across chiropractic, massage therapy, and nutrition, helping to reduce symptoms and improve resilience.
